About Japanese Proofreader

Japanese Proofreader is a small site for people who write or check Japanese text: learners past the beginner stage, translators working between Japanese and English, and anyone who has to send a Japanese email, notice or report and wants one more pass before it goes out.

The checker

The front page has a rule-based checker that runs in your browser. It looks for patterns that often turn out to be mistakes or inconsistencies, and explains each one. The legend lists every type it reports, and how to use it covers the settings and the limits. Nothing you paste leaves your device.

The writing

Five writers share the writing section: proofreading routines, kanji and kana, grammar and usage, translation review, and the books and tools on the desk shelf. You can read about each of them on the editors' desk. Pieces are written from published references and long practice with the language; when we describe a book or a tool, we say what it is and who it suits, and we do not claim tests we have not run.

How the site is paid for

Some pages link to shops. When a reader buys through one of those links the site may earn a commission, at no extra cost to the reader. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Links to other stores may earn a commission too. Shop links never decide what a guide recommends, and pages about the checker, privacy and contact carry none.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, please say so through the contact page. Corrections are made in the text itself.
